Whether Technology

I just finished doing an electronic restoration on an old Hallicrafters S40 communications receiver circa 1947. Replaced all the old paper capacitors and the electrolytic capacitors and a few resisters. I also replaced the audio out put tube and it's associated components with an audio amplifier module I had since that particular vacuum tube was pretty pricey and the transformer as well.

America's Untold Story - As Told By Oliver Stone

America's Untold History by Oliver Stone has been running on Showtime and so far the first nine parts are available on Youtube. I am rather amazed that this series is being shown on Showtime and even more amazed that the first 9 parts have been uploaded to youtube by someone other than Showtime itself. At least I think they have since I know nothing about the user who uploaded them. And that they have not been summarily removed as most such thing generally rather quickly.

Waxing nostalgic about America .... the gun connection

I read a diary a bit ago where the author was waxing nostalgic over what they missed about the 1950s and 1960s post WWII era. The supposed benefits of the cold war etc. Mostly the economic advantages those of us white middle class had.

I too miss some things about the era I grew up in. I shall list a few of them here.

The Decline and Fall of an American Empire

The American Empire was not like other historical empires, for from the very first it has been made up of various different ethnic and cultural groups. Initially French and Spanish. Then Dutch and British. With other nationalities coming later. Irish and German and Russian and (in my case) Finnish.

Disposable America

I remember watching part of a movie a while back with David Ogden Stiers as a musician and this young lady who came to audition her violin with him. When she finished he told her that the she played the piece flawlessly but that her performance lacked feeling. Lacked soul. Lacked emotion.

I feel that this country has lost it's feeling a soul. It's emotion.

before the industrial revolution everything you got was made by hand one at a time. There very likely were apprentices and helpers involved but it was one at a time. Each unique in some way from the the others. made by craftsman an artisans who learned and honed their skills and trade over the years.

The Show So Far

That I am no fan of capitalism or any of the Abrahamic religions should come as no surprise to anyone who has read any of my essays. To me capitalism is merely a reworking of feudalism where one can become a lord by buying the lordship and the serfs under him/her besides being born into it.

The results are generally the same. A few elites at the top of the heap making hey of the miserable lives of those underneath. "Any difference that makes no difference is no difference."

Christmas Pulla

I have been making a traditional Finnish sweet bread known as Pulla for the last couple of years. It is made with cardamom seed, ground and lots of egg and milk and butter. As well as time. Here is the recipe i follow. Well mostly follow. Swedish Finns call it Nissu. I grind my cardamom fresh. The stuff you get in the supermarket is not very good and quite often stale.

Finnish Pulla

A unique bread with a sweet flavor that makes a wonderful holiday gift! It takes about 4 hours to make, so allow yourself plenty of time.
