BP Oil Spill May Have Contributed to Dolphin Deaths, Study Finds
Granted that there are differing opinions but I live here and know people that are fishing for a living, the spill has had a direct effect on the fisheries.
The 2010 BP oil spill contributed to an unusually high death rate for dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, a new study suggests.
Between January and April 2011, 186 dead bottlenose dolphins washed ashore between Louisiana and western Florida. Most alarmingly, nearly half of these casualties were calves, which is more than double the usual proportion of young to old dolphins found dead. Scientists now blame both natural factors and human catastrophe for the unusual die-off.
An unusual number of near term and neonatal bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) mortalities occurred in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) in 2011, during the first calving season after two well documented environmental perturbations; sustained cold weather in 2010 and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWHOS).
Yeah, musics down there
Comments
yeah, 2 years later and we're not all that closer to
healing... and they wonder why some of us think maybe more drilling is a bad thing.... sigh...
Well next week I go shrimping
actually working on a boat with people that have done it for decades, I'll give a first hand report I hope that it won't be what I expect. I could use the money ;^)
I won't eat any fish or seafood
caught or farmed in the Gulf. I know the fishing industry there has to be hurting bad, and I feel really terrible about it, but I don't for one second believe that anything from the Gulf is, well, edible.
I've eaten shrimp,crabs and fish
within the last month. They were all from inland waters and the prawn is in hatch. I may die next week ;^)
Seriously, The main affect on the fisheries has been the quantity and quality for many fisherman. I'm going out next week in the deepwater with a friend I'll report back how those runs have been effected.
Is anything safe to eat anymore?
FFS! I can't keep live poultry. And I need chicken.
Since you asked
they'd be...
good eating. Not the peacocks, tho. Unless we were down to it~
OT: I love Chris Rock
Whatever happened to crazy? Indeed.
Also I wish there were Justice for the dolphins and the fishermen. I hate those commercials.
Whatever happened indeed
Now: They have problems
Before: They are the problem
I'm allergic to shellfish
so I'm not really missing anything.
No, wait. I had a grouper rueben yesterday. I guess that came from the Gulf. Oh well. If the gulf seafood doesn't kill me, the liquor will soon enough.
I understand
I'm allergic to sobriety I try and avoid it at all costs.
