So I was just watching the series finale of The Closer, one of my favorite shows and I got to wondering if I'm the only TV junkie around here...
Aside from the obvious political shows, I watch probably more than my fair share of TV shows. It's my favorite brainless way of unwinding. I mean, I like to read, but I need some brain cells to read for the most part; television is my guilty no real thinking required pleasure.
Ok, hang on to your hats! The shows I watch on a pretty regular basis tend to be drama, and I'm partial to the USA channels stable of shows, though TNT and HBO rock too. My favorites to watch are The Closer (or I used to), White Collar, Covert Affairs, Necessary Roughness, Burn Notice, Suits, Fairly Legal, Perception, The Glades, and The Newsroom. But I've been known to be fond of Rizzoli and Isles and Royal Pains as well.
So what shows, if any do you like to watch? Reality TV? Contest shows? Comedies? Drama? Soap? Come on, you know you watch something other than news... ;}

One of the coolest openings imo:
well...as you already know, poli
I too watch The Closer. I am also a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly magazine. In this week's issue their teevee critic, Ken Tucker, was doosh enough to spoil the very last episode for all of us--with NO spoiler warning. Assholio~
There isn't a lot of episodic teevee I watch anymore, but what I do watch, I don't need some shithead ruining for me. Grrr.
It was still good, but...damn.
yeah, i would've had major issues with him had...
i seen the article... exactly a major doosh... and i used to not watch a lot of tv, but then i got my DVR, so i can fit it in when it suits me... often i'll have 4 or 5 eps on tape so i can do a marathon without the week of wait... :D
and yeah, i've kind of stayed away from the political shows, so now my evenings are more free... :D
Duh. I watch sports.
I have watched teevee a lot in periods of my life. Now I can hardly stand it. Even during sports I'm always screaming at the announcers. And I'm not kidding. "Goddam give it up on the Tebow shit already. There are a few other interesting aspects of the game!" That's just a sample. Gets old for my wife. I can't help it. Lying, propagandistic--they pretty much ignore the truth about one of their very own who fell in Iraq, never mind. But see what I mean--I can only bear so much. The closer is silly enough that it's bearable. There's something addictive about what's her name's Southern charm style, which is so grating. The character is sooo ridiculous. Sorry. But I laugh. They'll do anything they like on that show, which I appreciate.
I value comedy above all else. Highlights of my life--literally the teevee highlights:
1. (and it's not even close.) Fernwood 2Night.
All the other numbers scrambled together: Larry David Show, Larry Sanders Show, early Late Late Night with David Letterman. Early Daily Show, current Colbert which I hardly ever watch any more, sometimes stand-up. It was a sad day when situation comedy became universally unbearable to me. Seinfeld was funny, but even that outlasted its stay.
Poligirl, it's amazing that the only one in your list that overlaps my wife is The Closer. She watches Damages, Nurse Jackie, a lot more of those kind, the Big C. I could bear to watch Nurse Jackie, but it pissed me off, sometimes even glorifying degeneracy, in my too proud eyes. Beavis and Butthead heh heh heh heh heh heh. You get the picture. We watched a tense, dramatic Deborah Carr movie today, maybe mid-50's. That was enjoyable. Set in Hungary. The American heroes were courageously facing likely torture. He told that Soviet stand-in for the former German evil man, "What I can't forgive you for is that you've made me hate--hate your kind for all the horrible things we've done." I was thinking, "Hold on a bit there fella. You're on modern teevee now. Not everyone who tortures is so bad. Get ahold of yourself and let's discuss this more calmly in private." That's how I watch teevee--running commentary. Like in Science Fiction Theater 2000 or whatever the number was. That was another highlight. Very funny show.
Oh Gawd, I almost forgot. I just came here from emailing my Beasts review to the guys we saw it with and others. I tried not to put spoilers in. I did say too much. I try to learn as little as possible before I go. Even previews can give away too much. That really sucks.
For me now--no DVR, no teevee. I don't see how anyone stands it. It makes sports possible. I can watch a football game in an hour or less. Football is perfect. Usually 30 seconds between plays.
Sorry for rambling. Hi everyone. Going to read your stuff.
i love sports too... most specifically football...
college and pro... and i do yell at the tv. and when it gets exciting i find myself turning the volume up a notch. if it was a really good game, i will realize my tv is blaring by the end of it... :D
and i love baseball too - it's a good unwind...
and Damages was ok... but i just couldn't get into it...
i used to love sitcoms - back when they knew how to do them... they don't much anymore... i still giggle at I Love Lucy, as outdated as it is now...
the second coolerst show theme:
and the third:
I read in the afternoon when I wake up(coffee)+watch TV at night
I also read late at night/early morning before I go to bed.
The Newsroom, True Blood, Burn Notice(love it), Veep, The Ricky Gervais Show, The Office, TDS, TCR, Game of Thrones(favorite), Breaking Bad(one of the best shows ever), The Walking Dead(love it and zombies), Mad Men(I don't idolize the period like much of the fanbase who miss the point), Louie, Wilfred, and Brand X(Matt Stoller is on it and Russel Brand is funny).
That might make it sound like all I do is watch TV, but I read a lot, and not all those shows are in season at the same time and only come on once a week in many cases. Sunday I am glued to the TV but during the weekdays I read more.
I'm starting to enjoy escapism more than any MSNBC shows(I only like Up with Chris Hayes because it is different and gives me a reason to tweet) or any political BS though I like TYT and Viewpoint Elliot Spitzer. But this election literally makes me realize that we the sheeple are really controlled by the Partisan War Syndrome.
Anyway, I'm going to be escaping more often than not because politics in this country is BS.
ahhh - i totally forgot about TDC & TCR...
i watch them too... and like you, it may sound like i watch a lot of TV, but i read a lot too... a whole lot.... :D
Indeed you do, my friend
:D
I honestly get annoyed with people who say they don't have a TV(it's fine if you don't need one but it doesn't make you a saint) or that they threw it out so they're going to constantly mention that. When I hear that over and over again, I'm not hearing what people think I'm hearing; I'm hearing, "I have no discipline."
