Tonight at the Party we're going for songs that take you back. You know, like a tune that will come on the radio and suddenly you're seventeen again, cruising the town in a car full of friends, partying and singing along until one of those friends loudly sings out, "tonight!" all by themselves at the wrong point in the song and everybody almost pees their pants laughing? Oh, wait...maybe that was just me! Yeah, well, it was this tune right here...
You're All I've Got Tonight
That oldies mix tape that I warned my friend I wasn't done with, that the tabs weren't popped out of, but she needed to borrow it, swore she'd be careful, but somehow this tune wound up with the words "it was juicy" embedded into it...
Build Me Up Buttercup
Now, damn near any Hank Williams tune reminds me of my Dad, but this one here takes me back to the big old family picnics we used to have where Dad would play his guitar and he and my uncles would sit around drink some beers and play into the night and us kids would beg him to play...
Kaw-Liga
Sometime in '97 my little sister told me she was singing with a band and asked if I would come out to see her perform and bring some friends. Of course I would! She introduced me to the male singer who was somewhat rude and told me he wasn't social. I asked my sister if he wasn't kind of an ass and she said, "Yeah, but he's really good." Yes, yes he was. Five years later I went to see them perform again on New year's Eve and I kissed that ass at midnight, he is now my husband. This is the first song I ever heard him sing...
Push
Once upon a time we had our own place and I had two dancing babies and we were all really happy. I can't hear this song without seeing bouncing pampered butts and bobbing toddler heads and I'm back there again dancing with my boys...
Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Some of you know this tune- it takes me back to many happy nights sitting in a dive bar and always, always gauging how it was going over and occasionally having somebody ask, "who does this?" as if it were something from the radio and being able to say, "he does."
Vengeance
So, what tunes do it for you, transport you to another time when you hear them? You don't have to tell the story, but don't you have a few trigger tunes? I'm going to share a few more of mine, won't you join me?

Just What I Needed
Driving the Florida with the whole family--I am laying on the back deck with my feet out the back window, listening to music that my dad has turned to just the rear speakers. This song comes on and Dad hollers: What's that thumping???
Me: It's the Cars
Dad: I know it's the car! I'm going to pull over!!!!

Kiss Me Deadly:
To my friend.
makes me think of my dad
me and my old man never got along too well. just two different people. he was a southern boy who always wanted to be a cowboy. he loved Marty Robbins. after he died my mom gave me this album, she said as far as she knew it was the only album my old man ever bought. don't know what clicked for him in this song but it was his favorite. must have played a movie for him in his mind. anyway, this song makes me think of him when he was young and strong and I was a little boy.
My Dad liked himself some Marty Robbins too...
He brought us up to listen to both kinds of music, country and western and then we all branched out from there~
oh, ain't that the truth
music wasn't something that my old man cared too much for but he did like Johnny Cash (grew up a few miles away from actually), Hank Williams and the old timers. Damn, if I had a quarter for every episode of Hee Haw we watched I could have paid for 3 college degrees.
