Presidential Debate Open Thread

Well, last night's debate was a real yawn fest. Neither one said anything unexpected and the immature American media seems to want to focus on 'zingers'. My personal opinion is that the debate represented a complete failure for the American people as both candidates promised to continue the drone wars, as well continuing the obscene spending levels for the American war machine. The 2 candidates positions were nearly mirror images of each other. Last night was a perfect illustration of why 3rd party candidates need to be included in these debates.

Good morning.

You're absolutely right about 3rd party candidates being included in all debates. If 3rd party candidates have their name on the ballots for this election, there is no reason why they shouldn't be included.

And the media and social media? It's a game, it's who can write the cleverest something and be shared more times than others. Too bad that same "enthusiasm" isn't sustained throughout the year regarding policies and issues.

The only thing that's missing from that game is fabulous prizes for the winners of the funniest zingers.

Here is what I watched last night:

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Obama's Final Campaign
Samantha Bee and Jessica Williams seize their last chance to see President Obama do what he does best as president -- campaign to be president.

Not that I would have watched anyway, but-

there was no way in hell I was ruining my birthday with that bullshit. I feasted on a sloppy cheesesteak with sauce, onions and mushrooms, I read selected poems from "A Light In The Attic" with Danny, then I watched a marathon of The Mentalist reruns, (that dude cracks me up) then I met the Rev and went to bed~

Danny is my son....Cleetus wooed me by reading

triv33's picture

Carl Hiaasen's "Native Tongue" aloud. The entire thing. I have Danny reading aloud now because at his eval last year they told us they knew he read WAY above his age level, but didn't know if he comprehended what he read, this made me curious as to what methodology they might be using and how stupid they were. Turns out he comprehends pretty damn well and it wasn't hard at all to figure out. Just hand the kid something humorous to read and see if he laughs. Hand him something he hasn't read before and ask him to read it out loud...is he putting emphasis on the right words? Gee whiz, is he reading that with feeling? Huh...I guess he does comprehend! And by golly, he enjoys it! The things a school won't muddy up to mask their own shortcomings with your autistic kid, lemme tell ya...

I knew you were talking about your son, I just thought it was funnier to picture you and Cleetus doing readings of Silverstein. I'm really happy to hear that Danny is doing great. The vast majority of public schools are poorly equipped to deal with any kid with a special need. My son was a student that not only had ADD, he actually caused ADD in other students. I don't think he had one teacher who wasn't just loaded with parenting advice for me. Teachers don't like to hear a parent's advice on how the teacher should do their jobs but they sure love to tell parents how we should be doing our jobs.

They talked as much

about the economy as they did foreign policy. Also there was a meme going around last night that was very disturbing, this was the first year since 84 that climate change wasn't mentioned at all. I read this from The Beast and it's sad how true it is
Winner of Third Debate Was Neither Obama Nor Romney, But George W. Bush

Tuesday night’s discussion was built around George Bush’s definition of foreign policy as American military policy. Obama, Romney, and Bob Schieffer worked through that prism, with little mention of the vast shifts in economic power that are remaking the globe.

Sadly, what won't be reported in the news today.

BREAKING: The Back Story to Kiriakou's Imminent Guilty Plea

Written by Jesselyn Radack

A change of plea hearing is set for today at 11:00 am in the Espionage Act case against Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) whistleblower John Kiriakou.

Let's be clear, there is one reason, and one reason only, that John Kiriakou is taking this plea: for the certainty that he'll be out of jail in 2 1/2 years to see his five children grow up.

The government is prepared to drop 80% of its case, including all Espionage Act charges (sound familiar, ahem, Tom Drake?). Kiriakou is expected to plead guilty to violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (IIPA)--there are no reported cases interpreting it because it's nearly impossible to prove--for "outing" a torturer. "Outing" is in quotes because the charge is not that Kiriakou's actions resulted in a public disclosure of the name, but that through a Kevin Bacon-style chain of causation, GITMO torture victims learned the name of one of their possible torturers. Regardless, how does outing a torturer hurt the national security of the U.S.? It's like arguing that outing a Nazi guarding a concentration camp would hurt the national security of Germany.
