Open Thread - Your "Wishes" For Obama's Second Term

What would you like to see accomplished in Obama's second term?  I don't mean what do you think will be accomplished, I mean what would you, personally, like to see as the main priority of Obama's second term.   Presidential second terms are notoriously unproductive.  Obama has been vague on his goals for his next four years.  Maybe he is satisified with the uninspiring list of tepid accomplishments from his first term, and now would just like to maintain the status quo.  He has not been definitive in stating his goals for his second four years.

Personally, I would like to see him push for two intertwined goals: building/improving infrastructure and developing green energy.  It would be very simple to use tax policy to stimulate the green energy industry.  Additionally, moving money out of the casino that is the Department of Defense and into these two areas would stimulate the economy and put millions of people to work in good paying jobs.  Those are the two items that I would ask the President to focus on in his second term.  What would you like to see accomplished over the next four years?

Well

with what he does when he does accomplish something, I am hoping he is less ambitious.  When the tea baggers become my obi wan Kenobi, something is amiss.

I don't think a lack of ambition will be a problem

He seems to drift without any real goal in mind.  I don't want to play a round of  'internet psychology' for 100 dollars, Alex; but I really don't understand his motivation to be president.  That being said, what would you like to see accomplished in the next 4 years.  I mean if you were given an opportunity to be the cabinet head of any agency, what agency would you take and what would you want to accomplish?

solar/green research and infrastructure repair are great goals

I'd add switching to a much more ambitious negotiating stance for mitigating climate change -- the successor to the Kyoto Protocol is supposed to be written by 2015, and US leadership would certainly make a huge difference.  If Obama wants historical kudos, he could try tackling the major planetary crisis of our time rather than making it worse.

And how about full withdrawal from Afghanistan rather than negotiating a presence past next year?

get out of Afghanistan and start shutting down our global bases

I agree with all of your points.  Time to leave Afghanistan and it is time to start shutting down bases that only exist to suck up money that could be better spent within our own borders.  Why are we in Italy?  Why are we in Japan?  An easy stimulus for the economy would be to redeploy 200k soldiers, sailers, airmen and marines back to the states.  Most of those young troops spend every penny they make and would be a boon to the local and state economies.

What I want is irrelevant to Obama. What you want is irrelevant

to Obama. It is futile to hope that he will do anything other than to continue to serve the Plutocratic Oligarchy, which is directly antithetical to the interests of me and mine.

All I want him to do is find some way to accelerate the collapse of the current system. Then I might actually be able to do something that might help improve our lot.

collapse the current system?

which system?  not a lot of site traffic today, can you expand on what you mean by collapse the current system and how that would help improve our lot?  I don't understand what you mean.

history will be interesting

Obama could go down as the most ineffective President ever unless historians agree that he wanted this awful mess to happen.

ineffective and incompetent leader

sartoris's picture

Based on his tenure in the Senate and his first 4 years I have to conclude that he has zero leadership abilities.  Call me wacky, a person who is President should have some leadership abilities.  He couldn't lead a single file on an escalator.
