Transgender students suffer more eating disorders

The August issue of The Journal of Adolescent Health includes an article entitled Eating Disorders and Non-Gender Conforming Youth

This study examined associations of gender identity and sexual orientation with self-reported eating disorder (SR-ED) diagnosis and compensatory behaviors in transgender and cisgender college students.

Data was derived from 289,024 students from 223 U.S. universities participating in the American College Health Association–National College Health Assessment II.

Rates of past-year SR-ED diagnosis and past-month use of diet pills and vomiting or laxatives were compared among transgender students (n = 479) and cisgender sexual minority (SM) male (n = 5,977) and female (n = 9,445), unsure male (n = 1,662) and female (n = 3,395), and heterosexual male (n = 91,599) and female (n = 176,467) students using chi-square tests. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of eating-related pathology outcomes after adjusting for covariates.

The study was done by members of Washington University in St. Louis.

Sunday Train: The New Gulf Wind, NOLA to Orlando

In this September's Trains magazine{+}, Bob Johnston looks at the history and current state of play of the eastern section of the Sunset Limited route, running from New Orleans through to, most of the time, Orlando Florida. This is a live topic since both houses have passed Amtrak funding bills, which are currently awaiting reconciliation, and both include language setting up a group to study re-establishing intercity rail service on the Gulf Coast.

This also ties into three issues previously examined on the Sunday Train. The Orlando terminus offers the possibility of connecting rail services, which include the Carolina services, some of which extend through to Florida, and also the planned Rapid Rail All Aboard Florida hourly daytime passenger services between Orlando and Miami. And the western connection ties this into the previous Congress-mandated study of upgrades to the existing Sunset Limited, which proposed to replace the current route by extending the Texas Eagle through to Los Angeles, connecting to a New Orleans corridor service at San Antonio.

Massively Ironic

Dr. Michael Brown ended July by asking what he calls A Sincere Question for Those Who Identify as 'Transgender" at Christian Post and Charisma News. I feel the need to point out that the scare quotes that bely the sincerity at Christian Post are absent at Charisma.

Brown has some things right.

If you identify as transgender and have read my previous articles or book chapters dealing with transgender issues, you almost certainly count me as an enemy, not a friend, a transphobic bigot lacking empathy—or even worse.

And I understand why you feel like that.

After all, I still refer to Bruce Jenner as Bruce and use male pronouns when speaking about him.

"I'm going to kill this faggot" --12 year old in Orlando

A 12 year-old Orlando boy sneaked out of his grandmother's house last night...taking a gun he had stolen along with him.

Cheyenne West, a transgender woman who was walking down a street near the Citrus Bowl heard him talking into his cell phone. She heard him say "I'm going to kill this faggot," so she started to run.

She said she was running for her life but when she realized the shooter was out of bullets, she turned around and began chasing him.

At the crosswalk of haters and hate

Stephen E. Thompson is a 45 year-old man who was working as a DJ at a party thrown at Down Under Lounge in Omaha. His attire for the evening consisted of what has been called priestly garb: (a black Catholic shirt with priest collar and skinny skeleton jeans.

photo barone_zps14zw6rq6.jpgKara Jeslyn Barone, 27, and a friend, both transgender women, needed to use the women's restroom that night. It turned out that Thompson's girlfriend, Dahlia Strange, needed to use the restroom at the same time.

These things happen...especially at bars.

Thompson went berserk. He began kicking at the door and tried to force his way in. Barone pushed him out and locked the door in order to keep him out. Strange finished her business and opened the door to leave. Thompson took the opportunity to punch Barone in the face...while calling her a "faggot" and other anti-gay slurs.

LGBT Catholics request meeting with Pope

photo 29CATHOLICSWEB-master675_zpsvohjqqm2.jpgAhead of the Pope's scheduled September visit to the United States, a group of LGBT Americans have sent His Holiness a letter asking him to meet with them and their family members to "promote great healing and reconciliation in our Church and society."

Lui Akira Francesco Matsuo said he was standing in line for communion one Sunday at his Roman Catholic church in Detroit when a fellow parishioner pulled him aside: Didn’t he know that the archbishop had just urged supporters of same-sex marriage not to take communion?

Mr. Matsuo, who is transgender, left and never returned to his parish.

Matsuo is one of the signers of the letter.

I want him to extend his hand openly, especially to the transgender community. I am a practicing Catholic. I just don’t have a parish I can call home.

--Mr. Matsuo, who is 28 and said he has identified as male ever since he was a toddler

Legacy

When you read the Diamond Sutra, you will read these characters:

Depending upon nothing, you must find your own mind.
--Diamond Sutra

So last evening I was looking around for a story to do for today and I ran across this article about Trace Peterson, who will teach a class at Hunter College this fall on the poetry of transgender people.

Literature departments and studies of literature are very comfortable approaching transgender subject matter as theory, or as types of metaphor. But there’s very little study of literature by transgender people.

--Peterson

Peterson is editor and publisher of the journal EOAGH and coeditor of Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics

And I reminded myself that I have not written a poem in ages. I didn't start writing them until I began to transition...or at least to explore transition. And now I have written over 200. But its been a few years since I visited that art.
