Reform Jews speak up in favor of transgender people

On Wednesday, October 4, the Department of Justice issued a memorandum stating that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not protect transgender employees in their places of work. In the memorandum, Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote, "Title VII's prohibition on sex discrimination encompasses discrimination between men and women but does encompass discrimination based on gender identity per se, including transgender status.

Perpetuating the bias in Ulster County

Ulster County is between Albany and New York City and contains the cities of Poughkeepsie and Kingston. A committee of the County Legislature has unanimously endorsed a resolution to schedule a July 11 public hearing on a proposed law to protect people from being discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity.

Equality arrives in Canada

Bill C-16, the Canadian Human Rights Act passed the Senate on Thursday and thus will become law with Royal Assent later this year.

The Act adds gender identity and expression as prohibited grounds for discrimination under Canadian law. The bill was introduced over a year ago and passed the House of Commons last November. Conservative forces once again tried to stall it in the Senate, claiming it imposed limits on free speech.

Massachusetts churches drop lawsuit

The churches gathered together by the so-called Alliance Defending Freedom to challenge the state's transgender legal protections are withdrawing their legal challenge.

Assured they can retain control over their bathrooms and changing facilities, and continue preaching an anti-transgender message if they choose to do so, pastors at four churches say they no longer plan to sue over the state’s trans protections bill.

Transgender persons around the world are targeted by rising levels of violence fueled by hatred and bigotry.

This is a global challenge and we all must do more to protect transgender persons on the basis of equality and dignity.
