An Ally's Journey

I am a white woman in the United States. I may have some mixed genetic background, but I was raised white and have always identified as white, not matter how uncomfortable that was/is for me. I cannot deny the deeply entrenched colonialist background of my ancestry. I have ancestors who came here in the 1600s. They "founded" the towns of Groton and Avery, Connecticut. I have ancestors who cherished their leadership role in the colonizing of Tennessee, Kentucky and Oklahoma. It is deeply painful to me that I have in my possession an historical document in which they are celebrated for blazing the trail to The West. That would be the Trail of Tears the Cherokees were driven along like so much cattle. Less than cattle, as there was no concern at all for their well being. So many suffered and died at the hands of my ancestors.

If This is What Democracy Looks Like...

So apparently, a small group of senators and administration officials hammered out a deal tonight that will be voted on later this evening. No doubt, both sides will be pressuring their members to vote for the deal for the good of the country. The Democratic Party sycophants loyalists will praise this capitulation pragmatic move while the mainstream talking heads oscillate between discussions of the "political implications" and playing up the magnitude of the now-averted crisis.

A Question For 2nd Admendment Supporters

I have one simple question for all 2nd Admendment supporters: What limitations to gun ownership are you willing to accept?  Can you accept a limit on the number of firearms that any individual can own?  A limit on the amount of rounds that a magazine/clip can hold?  A limit on the type of bullets that can legally be purchased?  What are you willing to accept?

Anti-Capitalist Meetup: Once Upon A Time: American Socialism by Richard Lyon

Last week JayRaye brought us a very powerful diary that used the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire as a point of embarkation. This week I'd like to take us into the world where that historically important tragedy happened. I want to focus on the American Jewish immigrant community from the late 1880s up to the beginning of WW I. It is a rich and vibrant chapter in American history.

Request for Occupy Sandy (etc.) Volunteers/Organizers' Contact info, referrals

Hey y'all. Vtdblue/Terry here. I could use your help with contacting organizers and volunteers who've worked with all the outstanding the ad hoc citizens' Sandy relief efforts. I know some of you have been closely following or involved yourselves.

Some folks here already know this, but aside from being a dyed in the wool progressive activist, I also do the academic thing for a living.

Defending the Tubz

Crossposted from DocuDharma

I think it's obvious why the more autocratic, authoritarian, and avaricious elements of the current criminal crony system of monarchist merchantile monopolism are constantly attempting to change the commons culture of the Internet.

They want to be able to charge you for access to the library/thesaurus/dictionary/encyclopedia/studio/printing press.

Eviction of Occupy Sandy: Staten Island

NYC Threatens Imminent Eviction Of 24/7 Sandy Relief Hub

OccupyWallStreet.org
Nov. 30, 2012, 3:07 p.m. EST

The community-run network of support for food, volunteering, supplies, clothing, and human services is an essential part of the New York City recovery efforts, and the mayor's office wants to shut it down immediately. The mayor's office is calling upon local police forces to "clear all outdoor sites" effective immediately. We are calling on all New Yorkers to advocate on behalf of these community run hubs that provide essential services to those whom the city and federal government, and support agencies, have under-served, neglected, or abandoned.
