Hate strikes in Linn County, Iowa

photo Alyssa2_zpsbgyzlyme.jpgAlyssa Eve is a 23-year-old transgender woman who transitioned six years ago. One might think people had gotten over that by now.

But around 11:30 pm Friday Alyssa heard banging on the windows of her apartment.

She quickly called her mother, let out her Labrador retriever and went to investigate.

The first thing I saw was, ‘Kill yourself’ on my door.

A life cut short

photo Devin_zpsqiq4vtkn.jpgTen days ago a charred body was found in a burned out car in New Orleans East (The 9th Ward). That body has now been identified as Devin Diamond. The Nola Coroner's Office has classified the death as a homicide. The victim was beaten to death before the car was torched.

Although described as a male by the Coroner's Office, further investigation reveals that Devin had begun transition.

George Melichar, who knew Diamond through a French Quarter retail job, said the two had a conversation on the subject several months ago.

When I asked her if she identified as a man or a woman, she told me that she would answer to both. But being that she was transitioning, I felt that it was the best to refer to her as a woman, and she agreed.

Devin was very loved, and Devin was very kind. And that's what makes this more difficult. In addition to losing a friend, we lost an LGBT leader.

The Knucklehead effect

The Chicago City Council's Committee on Human Relations advanced an ordinance to the City Council Floor which will close a loophole in the city's human rights code which could make it difficult for transgender people to access public washrooms.

Under examination was the requirement that people be able to show a government-issued identification card that indicates that their gender matches that indicated for the washroom.

Support from Spooks, Agents and Analysts

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper addressed the bathroom thing in a press release prior to speaking at the 5th Annual Intelligence Community Pride Summit being held at DIA headquarters in Washington, DC.

I won't dwell on the issue of transgender rights. I know our nation is currently engaged in a complex conversation with strong feelings on both sides. But here in the IC [intelligence community], we have the chance to lead by example.

Sleeping on the streets

Jennifer Ney transitioned 24 years ago. She has been mostly homeless since then.

They just threw me out in the streets there in Tulsa, I was in Oklahoma City, they says, ‘you’re not welcome here.'

--Ney

Friday night she sought shelter with the Gospel Rescue Mission of Grants Pass, OR.

They said the likes of you as a transgender person is not welcome here because of biblical teachings.

Charlie says he'll sign the bill

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has spent months keeping mum about whether or not he would sign a bill protecting transgender people's right to access public accommodations.

That has now changed.

We’ve certainly listened to a variety of points of view from many sides and have said, from the beginning, that we don’t want people to be discriminated against.
