Idiot British Cop Tasers Blind Man - Mistakes Cane for Samurai Sword

What a relief to know that it's not only American citizens forced to deal with idiotic cops. A 62 year old British citizen was walking to a pub to meet friends when he was unexpectedly tasered by a cop who mistook his cane for a samurai sword. This is eerily reminiscent of the moronic Houston cop, Matthew Marin, who shot and killed wheelchair bound, double amputee Brian Claunch, when Marin mistook the ink pen Claunch was holding for a pistol. So, today we have a rare two part question for discussion: 1.

"Sold Into "a Piece of Hell:" A Death of Innocence at Gitmo"

By Jason Leopold, Truthout | Investigative Report

Sold for a $5,000 bounty, Adnan Latif was among the first prisoners detained at Guantanamo. A federal judge and two presidential administrations said he didn't belong there. A decade later he left in a box - and no one will say why.[...]

Masked Cowards Attack Moscow Gay Bar

Under the rule of Putin, Russia has quickly returned to the authoritarian days of communism. Any form of dissent is not tolerated. Differences of opinion are not to be voiced and different lifestyles are seen as a threat. This was clearly demonstrated on Friday, October 12, when a crowd of at least 2 dozen masked men stormed a popular Moscow Gay Bar and viciously attacked the patrons. At the time of the attack there were approximately 50 people in the bar. More than 10 were injured in the assault and 4 (3 women and one man) had to be hospitalized.

Elizabeth Warren Supports Legalization of Marijuana and Physician Assisted Suicide

Yesterday (September 23, 2012) Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate, Elizabeth Warren, gave an hour long interview to radio station WTTK-FM. During the interview she touched on many different subjects, including the legalization of marijuana and physician assisted suicide. It's strange to think that I now live in an America in which of those two topics, physician assisted suicide is the more controversial.

Anti-Capitalist Meetup: Working Class Self-Activity: Leading the USA to Democracy by Le Gauchiste

The phrase in this diary's title - "self-activity" - often elicits confused looks, and not only among non-lefties, sad to say. Yet the concept of self-activity is absolutely central to any radical politics that purports to be "of the people and by the people" and not merely "for the people." This Labor Day is a good time to reflect on American working class self-activity, because over the course of American history, through its self-activity the American working class has led the nation in realizing the promise of the Declaration of Independence that the U.S.

Is the Ryan Pick doubling down on Voter Suppression?

Burning the Midnight Oil for Progressive Populism

Lots of puzzling around about Romney tapping Ryan for Vice President. Lots of coverage of nervous Republicans down-ballot: People's World: Republicans fear Ryan pick could sink GOP.

Now, for inside baseball politics at the national level, I get nothing that can't be picked up by following the right people on twitter. However, I was thinking ... is it likely Romney picked Ryan without his campaign running the numbers? Maybe is there's something in the numbers that led them to pick Ryan, then I've got a shot of seeing tha footprints of that for myself.

When I want horse race numbers, I go to Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight, taken into the NYT system last year. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to subsidize the unthinking stenography on economics and energy and transport that we normally think of when we think "New York Times" to get access to horse race info, but luckily the main blog is a teaser sitting outside the NYT paywall.

So, what tale do the numbers tell?

Via Esquire: 'The Lethal Presidency of Barack Obama'

Does anybody even care?

They're all just "terrorists" or "collateral damage", right?

Obama's Administration Killed a 16-Year-Old American and Didn't Say Anything About It. This Is Justice?

This is why cheap sloganeering like "Hope" and "Change" has been replaced by "Forward".

"Forward" - past all of the horrible injustices committed by a president who claimed he was different. (Although, if you listened closely enough, he warned you that he wasn't.)
