Some things never change

The Salvation Army is at it again.

A substance abuse center operated by the organization has been exposed by the New York City Commission on Human Rights to be discriminating on the basis of gender identity, which tuns out to be illegal in NYC. The center has been found to be one of four refusing to accept transgender patients, discriminating in housing by assigning rooms based on gender assigned at birth rather than gender identity, subjecting patients to invasive physical examinations, and/or segregating transgender patirnts away from their other clients.

Transphobe to take case to Michigan Supreme Court

Yvette Cormier sued Planet Fitness of Midland back in February of 2015 after she encountered a transgender woman in the common area of the women's locker room.

She left the locker room and notified the front desk that a “man” was using the women’s locker room, and was told the gym’s policy is that people are allowed to use the corresponding facilities of whatever sex they identify with, court documents state.

Tomorrow the District of Columbia will become the first jurisdiction in the United States to issue driver's licenses with a non-binary gender option of X.

The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles worked with the National Center for Transgender Equality to implement the new option. It follows a wave of court orders in the past year that have designated at least 20 people legally non-binary, challenging the available options for gender on identification documents.

Perpetuating the bias in Ulster County

Ulster County is between Albany and New York City and contains the cities of Poughkeepsie and Kingston. A committee of the County Legislature has unanimously endorsed a resolution to schedule a July 11 public hearing on a proposed law to protect people from being discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity.

Equality arrives in Canada

Bill C-16, the Canadian Human Rights Act passed the Senate on Thursday and thus will become law with Royal Assent later this year.

The Act adds gender identity and expression as prohibited grounds for discrimination under Canadian law. The bill was introduced over a year ago and passed the House of Commons last November. Conservative forces once again tried to stall it in the Senate, claiming it imposed limits on free speech.

Federal Judge rules ADA available for use by transgender woman

When the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, Jesse Helms insisted on tacking on an amendment which excluded application of the ADA to transgender people.

Kate Lynn Blatt of Pottsville, PA sued Cabella, Inc. in 2014 for sex discrimination in her dismissal after she suffered much harassment, including being forced to wear a name tag with the name she was assigned at birth.

Jeff Sessions: Words I can't believe in

Yesterday Judge Louis Guirola Jr. of the US District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi sentenced Joshua Vallum to 49 years in prison for the hate crime murder of Mercedes Williamson, a transgender Alabama teenager.

This was the first ever application of federal hate crime laws in regards to the murder of a transgender person.
