Stretching gender boundaries

Former French Olympic swimmer Casey Legler is a male model. But she is a cisgender female.

... I was in Brooklyn and there were, you know, this group of kids that was like coming down, as they do - where I come from we call them "the children", so all of like the gays and the queers - you know, the children, the kids. And they're walking down the street and one of them was particularly loud. And she was talking, talking, talking, talking, talking, talking, talking, and then suddenly she goes, "I know who you are!" And she looks at me and she goes, "Thank you for doing what you're doing." And she tears up and she says, "You're making it OK for me to be here." At the end of the day, that's what I'm in the business of. Like, that's it. Like, if the image of me out there in the world makes it easier for one more kid to think that there's some f**king place for them, then that's the business I'm into.

Elliott Sailors is also working as a male model with a female body. When she and her husband, Adam Santos-Coy are out in public, they are frequently mistaken as a gay couple.

Sometimes people just see us as [that], which doesn't bother us, except when people are unkind.

[E]arlier on in my career, I would get frustrated because I thought I looked too masculine.

Instead of pouting her full lips, Sailors now binds her breasts and accentuates her strong jaw line.

She says her husband, Adam Santos-Coy, is supportive — although she was a jaw-dropping blonde when he married her.

“He said he knew people would see me differently once I did it, but he didn’t realize how much people would see him differently,” she said, explaining that think that many think they’re a gay couple.

I’ve never regretted it. I’m standing for something different to be possible in the world — and not just for me. It’s a stand for self-expression, transformation and freedom.

I'd be remiss if I failed to mention Andreja Pecic.

Robyn's picture

photo 95167-andrej_pejic_fotos_3_zps0thpn3r1.jpg...Andreja Pecic, who used to do full-on androgyny before she finally transitioned last year.

Andreja told her story to People.

I was proud of my gender nonconforming career. But my biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body. I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that.
