Carving space for herself

When Summer Luk was a student at Biola University , she was forced to sign a contract promising not to drink, party, or have sex...and of course, definitely not to be transgender. The Hong Kong native has now transferred to NYU, has been able to come out to her professors as who she is, has interned for GLAAD, and the music major has written and recorded an original song, now made into a video directed by Laura Camarena and featuring a diverse group of transgender people.

The lyric video explores the performative nature of gender, the difficulties of navigating the legal system and finding a place where transgender people are protected as citizens against prejudice, discrimination and hate-motivated violence. By including transgender people who are of different races, ages, faiths, and stages in their transition this video showcases the huge spectrum that exists within the community.

India's first transgender band drops Pharrell Williams cover

6-Pack Band comprises six transgenders singing original songs, including a cover version of Grammy-winner Pharrell Williams' hit "Happy". They have been joined by Bollywood star Sonu Nigam for their debut collection.

We are taking one step at a time. There are total six songs. I felt very happy singing with them. They were singing my songs all the time, they have a very good vibe. I really enjoyed their innocence and child-like energy.

Gender Prison: Annie Lennox on feminism, gay and transgender

photo Annie-Lennox_zps6304e59e.jpgAnnie Lennox has been interviewed several times lately and expressed some ideas worth noting.

We’re coming to a place where [feminism] needs to be inclusive.

I think the LGBTQ community are a part of that movement and we’re all sort of connected on this particular level and it’s very exciting – watch that space.

I am so happy to see now that transgender women and men are able to come out of the shadows finally and say ‘Look we’re here. Why do we need to pretend we don’t exist?

It’s a very interesting time.
